Pharmacy Technician

Primary Function

A Pharmacy Technician shall work under the direction of the Pharmacist to promote and maintain good interpersonal and interdepartmental relationships. A Technician shall master various pharmacy responsibilities in order to assist in training Pharmacy Technicians. All Pharmacy Technicians shall be trained in multiple functions within the scope of their job description. It is the responsibility of the Pharmacist in Charge to ensure that the Pharmacy Technicians maintain adequate skill levels for each of these functions through ongoing supervision, mentoring, monitoring and evaluation of practice based operational activities.

Reporting

· Pharmacist (on duty at the time Technician is working)

Requirements [OPIN 3-1 b.i, b.iv]

· Must be flexible and be able to work different schedules to meet client and pharmacy needs.

· Possess detailed knowledge of prescription drugs and laws governing prescription drugs.

· Demonstrate competent working knowledge of participating third party insurance plans.

· Possess thorough knowledge of the Pharmacy Technician duties and scopes of responsibility.

· Be able to work in fast-paced environment.

· Possess ability to troubleshoot and solve problems.

· Demonstrate strong verbal and written communications skills.

· Must be organized and be able to prioritize tasks.

· PC knowledge and general navigation.

· Operate in a manner consistent with professional, ethical, and legal standards of proper pharmacy practice.

Responsibilities [OPIN 3-1 b.i, b.iv]

· Fill new medications orders, refills and renewals for Pharmacy clients.

· Credit client medications that are not picked up within 10 days.

· Restock pharmacy shelves when medications are received from the wholesaler.

· Check for outdated medications on monthly basis (30 days).

· Prepares prescriptions for the pharmacist to check.

· Prepare any packages that will be mailed to patients.

· Assist pharmacists in training new pharmacy technicians and cross training other technicians.

· Make recommendations to the pharmacist regarding methods and or procedures that can be improved.

· Ability to help others whenever and wherever there is a backlog.

· Be accurate, proficient, timely, knowledgeable, thorough and complete in one’s work.

· Have a willingness to learn new responsibilities and tasks.

· Deliver medication in a reasonable walking distance in an emergency situation

Qualifications, Licensure, Certification [CPE 3-2 a, b; OPIN 3-1 b.ii, b.iii]

· Qualifications Licensure/Registration, and Certification based on state

· California – Pharmacy Technicians in California must:

· Hold a high school diploma or equivalent

· Be licensed/registered as a pharmacy technician with the state of California

· Preferred: Has one year of experience in a Pharmacy Technician.

· Preferred: Be certified by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Health Career Association (NHA)

· Maryland – Pharmacy Technicians in Maryland must:

· Hold a high school diploma or equivalent

· Be registered as a pharmacy technician with the state of Maryland

· Preferred: Has one year of experience as a Pharmacy Technician

· Preferred: Be certified by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Health Career Association (NHA)

· Florida – Pharmacy Technicians in Florida must:

· Hold a high school diploma or equivalent

· Be registered as a pharmacy technician with the state of Florida

· Preferred: Has one year of experience as a Pharmacy Technician.

· Preferred: Be certified by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Health Career Association (NHA)

· New York – Pharmacy Technicians in New York must:

· Hold a high school diploma or equivalent

· Preferred: Has one year of experience as a Pharmacy Technician.

· Preferred: Be registered as a pharmacy technician with the state of New York

· Preferred: Be certified by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National Health Career

Working Conditions

· Constant standing or walking about is required. Manual dexterity is required for sustained periods.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $15.50 - $18.00 per hour

Expected hours: 37.5 per week
